The Ideal Investor
 

Viatical investments are not appropriate for everyone and certainly not for most seniors and retirees. But there are exceptions. For example, a woman who heard me on talk radio phoned to order Viatical Settlements: An Investor's Guide. She and her mother planned to invest. Her mother, she said, would be an ideal investor despite her age. Her mother's profile fit these general guidelines:

In another situation, a caller said that he realized the investment was not appropriate for his mother, age 61, but it was appropriate for him.

Most exciting were phone conversations with trustees who were interested in viaticals for the trusts they administered. This appeared to be a perfect match.

As the 21st Century began, many viatical providers were bustling to get their affairs in order so as to qualify for institutional funding. This is good news: Viators will be better protected, institutional investors are savvy (and meet all the basic qualifications described above), and the viatical industry will be on a sound footing, confident of its future ability to provide these services to patients and their loved ones.

Within a few years the only companies that market to John Q. Public will be companies that should be held suspect.
